Mention the word “bicyclist” and most people immediately picture someone white and middle-class. The same way the phrase “opera singer” conjures images of a heavy-set woman with her mouth wide open.

Taller property tax bills

If you think rising tax rates hurt the average single family homeowner, imagine the guy who owns the 649,033-square-foot Clark Tower.

The Memphis City Council recently voted to raise the property tax rate to $3.40 per $100 of assessed value, up 9.2 percent from $3.11.

Memphis isn’t alone, as several suburban cities raised their tax rates to offset budget shortfalls due to lower property tax assessments and Shelby County government is proposing a tax increase as well.
